Check These Items Off Your Moving Checklist

You just found out your company is opening a new office on the other side of the country, and you are one of the employees who they wish to transfer to help build up the new office. If you are lucky, your boss will have given you enough time to research moving companies and come up with a game plan to move. If you are given a month or two, or even a few weeks, here are some guidelines you should follow.

One of the first things you will need to do is find a reputable moving company to help you move your big items to your new location. When doing your initial search, look for companies, such as Colonial Van Lines, with good reviews. Next, you will want to create a pack it or trash it list. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it in three to six months, trash it or donate it. During this time, you will also want to confirm your moving date with your company.

One you have the above steps taken care of, start packing. To make things easier, go room by room or pack seasonal items you know you won’t need first. If there is anything you know you will be using before the move, such as medication, wait to pack those items.

If you have already secured housing in your new location, now is the time to start notifying others of your new address. Go the your local post office and setup mail forwarding so you don’t miss any important mail, notify your bank, physicians, insurance company, credit card companies, and anything else where you receive important notices from. Don’t forget your magazine subscriptions either!

Some other areas to note:

  • Pay close attention when packing any valuables or items that may break
  • Schedule disconnection of utilities for a couple days after you move
  • Schedule for connection of utilities in your new location
  • Empty any safe deposit boxes and setup new accounts

With this checklist and a reputable moving company moving your items, your transition to your new location will be an easy one.
